Film Director, Pereira Fuster on Friday said her movie was born out of the lack of access to education for girls in Afghanistan.
In giving them a voice, she said her aim was to empower the girls through her film, ‘Wings of Change’ to tell their stories.
She said with the support of the National Geographic, she’s worked with refugee children across camps to strengthen children to achieve their purpose in life.
“With my project, I trained and give them tools to function. It’s not just about telling their stories but, teaching them the tools and allowing them to chose a topic and tell their own stories”, Fuster said on the third day of Women’s International Film Festival In Nigeria (WIFFEN), held in Abuja.
“This film was made by a group of teenage girls trained in production and they decided to tell the stories of their attack in Kabul, Afghanistan. They were talking about how difficult it is to be a girl, how difficult it is to study in Afghanistan. They want to create awareness about this issue.
“In a way, they were able to transform the anger and fury they feel because in their home country, the girls cannot go to school, their tradition does not allow. They were able to transform the anger and frustration they feel in a form of creating this story to a broader audience that can bring discussions and make people be aware of the situation, discuss the importance of school and be able to study”, Fuster said.
She further said her role was only to help them achieve what they wanted from the beginning.
“It’s a film I directed with the teenage girls”, she concluded.
