Abuja, Nigeria – Mediaage NG News – The Nigerian Senate on Wednesday considered a bill seeking to stop Central Bank Governor and the deputies from participating in politics.
This could be in reference to last February’s presidential election that had the former Central Bank governor, Godwin Emefiele picking a N100 million presidential nomination and expression of Interest form from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
However, Mr. Emiefele said the form purchased for him by some interest group of rice farmers.
Despite public outcry for Emefiele’s resignation or sack by the then President, Muhammadu Buhari, he kept his position until he was suspended by current President Bola Tinubu in May as part of his reforms of the financial sector of the economy.
Section 9 of the CBN Act, 2007, the apex bank governor must not venture into any other vocation while in office and must resign in writing to the President if he nurses such intention.
Mr. Emiefele has since been in detention, having appeared in court severally.
