President Bola Tinubu has appointed his son-in-law, Oladimeji Bankole as the Managing Director of the Federal Housing Authority (FHA). He is the husband to the President’s eldest daughter, Folashade.
He is also a former member of Nigeria’s House of Representatives.
Although, this is the first time a relative to the President has been appointed to a position in the federal government, it has sparked concerns about nepotism, also dividing opinions among Nigerians on social media.
Some argue that there are more qualified and deserving candidates than Mr Ojo.
“Blatant nepotism is a leadership weakness. It’s unfortunate Nigerian leaders don’t see it as a form of ethical failure,” one said on X (formerly twitter).
Others defended the appointment, entailing his relationship with the president should not rule him out of government positions.
The presidency said Mr Ojo had “over a decade of work experience in the housing and hospitality industries”, while making the announcement
His appointment is part of the president’s move to overhaul the management of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development.
The FHA falls under the ministry and is expected to help deliver affordable homes across the country.
